The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has warned security agencies, political parties, and lawmakers against torture as the political season kicks off.

Speaking ahead of the United Nations International Day for victims of torture in Kampala, Mr Crispin Kaheru, who represented UHRC chairperson Mariam Wangadya, emphasised that torture must end, survivors should be supported and perpetrators should face the law.

The UHRC chairperson also urged all law enforcement and security agencies to act in line with Article 221 of the constitution and international human rights standards .

The call follows the violence witnessed and reported against journalists and some voters in the March 13 Kawempe by-election and Mr Edward Ssebuufu, alias Eddie Mutwe, who was abducted and tortured.

Ms Pauline Namamba Mutumba, the director of complaints investigations and legal services at UHRC, when asked about the status of those who were tortured in the Kawempe by-election, said 11 complaints were registered.

She explained that eight of these complaints were from journalists and three from private citizens.

She added that the tribunal would schedule the listed complaints for hearing later in the year.
